once a fellow of whp artists are encouraged to invite their own collaborators for a week of residency and a showcase of their imagining. shannon bodrogi was one of the first whp artists in residence who helped us think about what the shape of the residency might look like. their first piece of advice was that a week was not long enough - which translated to the four core residencies being a month long - time. & more time. plus plenty of space. with zero expectations.
this residency is the first iteration of a returning fellow collecting their people here - & so far so good - love having a band on site - the soundtrack is ongoing. they will be playing in the barn for the brunch concert.
last weekend we had the kin salt seance - hard to put into words what occurred here - but it was without a doubt a highlight of the project. john davis was invited to collect a team of people to achieve this idea - keith evans, kathleen quillian, sean horchy, suki o’kane, linda scobie, & renee delores were the participating artists who utilized the house as both an instrument and film screen with visual and audio conversations evolving between the rooms, the onlookers and the artists. a year of conversation & imagining that landed in a week of residency/installation and seven hours of performance - the open house event was elongated so guests could witness the light in the house as it changed along with the sounds and projections - all the while using the different stages of light from 3pm until 10pm. “dreamlike” - perhaps the most shared word of those who attended. very few photos and videos were taken as we were all transfixed and floating outside of normal time. a guest named mimi heft stepped up at the end of the night and offered her voice from the roof while john continued on the guitar and suki projected onto her bass drum in the chicken coop. a 10 minute audio clip recorded by sean horchy from the branch of the old oak tree is available to listen to on the new whp internet radio. also, emrys reads some words written by keith evans for the seance which also can be heard on the whp radio. the entire radio loop is currently about 45-50 minutes & includes a recording of a woman speaking about her experience with beings from another planet - courtesy of john and keith.
everyone already fantasizing about the next iteration of kin salt in 2025.
whp internet radio is a project by kelley o’leary, tino gonzales and brian bartz. another year long conversation that came to fruition here at the beginning of the seance - this timing was unplanned and perfect given the common interests of the kin salt folks and the internet radio folks - a lovely path crossing. these three artists will also be loading some of their own work onto the radio loop soon - so stay tuned. the radio is best listened to on a computer with firefox or chrome - a bluetooth speaker is very helpful for the volume. stick with us while we work out the kinks in the coming weeks - really excited to share what we have so far! please offer feedback with what you experience using it. or perhaps you have an idea to propose for a future radio broadcast?
last year we decided that winslow house project needed a “month of nothing” scheduled into the calendar - a time for the collaborators and fellows of whp to use the house if/when they can for their own needed space and time - come for lunch, stay a night, help in the garden, cook a meal, stare at the wall, etc… & so, we now have september with nothing. this will also be a time for bigger house projects - all part of the ongoing restoration. the house will be painted, the wall behind the stove tiled and some plumbing issues addressed. it is not that there is nothing that will be happening - it is simply a program free time for the house to digest it all and reset with time and space to contemplate ideas - for instance, should whp have an archive? will the archive ever restore us? what {if anything} might we archive? analog or digital? archive no archive.
the upcoming october residency will end with an open house on sunday october 27 from 3-6pm. so mark your real life calendars.
october 1-15 is the proposal period for residency in 2025. a link will be on the website and on the IG bio to submit. let us know what you might do with a month at winslow house project. start your thinking now and let it evolve…. the majority of the proposals come in last minute - in order to alleviate the smushing effect of the whp readers - get yours in early {for extra bonus points}
in november we will have a bazi astrology writing workshop with sun park and shirin khalatbari co-organized with the san francisco arts commission - this event is in conversation with an exhibition curated by shirin makaremi for SFAC. see website(s) for details as they come into focus.
the 8th of december from 6-9pm we will have a year end gathering of all those involved in the project. this is a community event that is offered to those who have contributed to the project. a time to connect with each other and imagine futures. really looking forward to this. & keep your eye out for writing days, film screenings, listening parties, poetry readings, etc… before we find ourselves in a new year.
thank you for following along in the unfolding of the project - it has been a wild and beautiful ride.
